Ellen G. fucken White. Allow me to furnish you with some of her ideas.
In her book “An Appeal to Mothers” (Page 27) she suggests that masturbation causes: “various diseases, such as catarrh, dropsy, headache, loss of memory and sight, great weakness in the back and loins, affections of the spine, the head often decays inwardly. Cancerous humor, which would lay dormant in the system their life-time, is inflamed, and commences its eating, destructive work. The mind is often utterly ruined, and insanity takes place.”
Apart from the absolute ludicrous scientific invalidity of this, who the fuck is she to tell others what they can and can’t do with their genitals? That’s none of her business. Much like the Catholic tradition attempted to control human sexuality for centuries, Ellen White merely reflected a system of sexual repression that was rife in her era.
Ellen White was also a huge advocate against people playing chess, checkers, cards, dancing, etc. Her reason for this? Apparently “heaven condemns them.” Care to provide evidence for this Ellen? Isn’t it a bit convenient that you cannot prove this, nor disprove this? Do we just accept what she says despite the unverifiable nature of it? She states this a few times in her works. She uses ambiguous charges of religious authority to “prove a point.” THIS IS IRRATIONAL. The reference I got this one from is Testimonies Vol 1, page 514. Ellen White began a conspiracy that people who go to church on Saturday will be killed by a one-world-government (Great Controversy, page. 592). This wasn’t a new conspiracy either, but it’s sad to think that fringe dwellers still stir themselves up in complete fear and get drunk on paranoia over cherry picking real world data.
She also has an entire sleuth of failed prophecies. For example, she made a prediction that England would take over the United States during the Civil war (the reference for this Testimonies Vol 1, Page 257). The historical context of this is that during the civil war, Ellen White was pro-slavery and believed that the north should stop waging war with the south. She urges in Testimonies Vol 9 page 214, “The Colored People should not urge that they be placed on an equality with White People.” A little further down the exact same page she says, “the word of proclaiming the truth for this time is not to be hindered by an effort to adjust the position of the Negro race.” Ellen White, GET FUCKED! You couldn’t show your racism any clearer than that! She clothed her bigotry in religious garb.
I could go on for pages and pages, but this post is getting very long. As I said, she is awful, was regressive (even for her time), and I would suggest she is up there with Joseph Smith in terms of how ridiculous her writings are.
